While Grey College and Grey High battled it out on the muddy rugby field, Collegiate hosted their own Bloemfontein derby against Grey College’s sister-school, Oranjemeisies.  This is an annual feature on the schools’ calendars and although Oranje won most matches on the day, the Collegiate hockey and netball teams are proving stronger opposition each year.

The First Hockey Team match was particularly exciting with Collegiate’s Catherine Fish scoring the opening goal deflected off a short corner.  The intensive pace did not let up for a minute, particularly as both teams boast of South African players, and there were many counter-attacks.  By half-time Antoinette Louw had equalised the score at 1-1, but soon into the second half Collegiate again took the lead with another goal as the result of a short corner, this time scored by SA under 21 player, Toni Marks.  However, the “meisies” from the Freestate showed true determination and upped their ball possession, with Joalene Fouche scoring a second goal so that the match ended with two goals all.
