Issue 12, 21 October 2011
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Parents

May I wish all our Hindu families a very happy Diwali which they will celebrate on 26 October. My congratulations go to all our new office bearers for 2012. I wish you well for your term of office and look forward to an exciting year. Our other thrilling news is that our hostel, under the name of St Michael and St George, has been reinstated as a fully fledged school House.  Many years ago St Michael and St George constituted two separate Houses of the school, but as the boarder number decreased, the two houses amalgamated into one House.  Again, boarders became fewer and only the Queen Houses were used as school Houses.  Now that we have nearly 100 boarders, they believe that they are a force to be reckoned with!  We wish them all the best for the year ahead.

It gives me great pleasure to share the fact that Miss Ellis’ health is improving daily.  She returned home from hospital on 5 October and we look forward to seeing her at special functions again soon.

I would like to salute all girls who received prizes at Speech Night. There is an abundance of talent in this school and the girls have worked very hard.  Well done, girls!

Our final assembly will be on Friday 25 November as that is the last day when big exams are being written.  Some subjects will still be written after that date.  Reports will be handed out on Friday 9 December. Please take note that in 2012 the first term starts earlier than usual, namely on Wednesday 11 January.
We wish all our girls an enjoyable and fruitful examination period.

THEATRICAL THRILLS

The annual Alexander Playhouse High Schools' Play Festival semifinals took place on the 10 and 11 October.   Donna de Jongh, Amy Annear, Caitlin Wiggill and Hildegarde Malan travelled to East London and performed the play entitled “Disturbances of the Feminine Kind”, an in-depth investigation of womanhood.  The play was collaboratively directed by all the girls with Donna de Jongh as the main director.  Naturally, these talented actresses were thrilled to have been chosen as one of the three schools to perform in the final round of the festival at a gala evening on 12 October.  A highlight of the festival was the invaluable and inspiring guidance and direction Deon Opperman gave to the four actresses at a rehearsal for the gala evening.

A dramatic fairytale ending was in store for the actresses. The play came second overall in the competition with Donna de Jongh winning the best actresses and a prize of a R35 000 bursary to study at a university of her choice, and Amy  Annear being named the runner-up.  Opperman noted that Donna was not only a born actresses but also a born director which he said was a very rare combination to find in one person.  He also praised “Disturbances of the Feminine Kind” as being quietly profound.  The provincial festival will become a national festival next year with its aim being to reward and nurture the dramatic interest and talent at a high school level.  This festival gives the Dramatic Arts the recognition it deserves as the Dramatic Arts is an integral facet of any society in its attempt, at a fundamental level, to bring about social transformation and create great performers and    leaders of a  country.

Special thanks must go to Jade Limbert who also travelled to East London for the festival in the capacity of lighting   technician. Her wealth of wisdom and experience regarding the technical side of stage productions is tremendous, and she will be sorely missed by Collegiate as she is matriculating this year.
