Through the Chat we have frequently alerted all to the importance of our girls exercising vigilance while waiting for lifts after school. Despite various appeals, many of our girls are still negligent about waiting inside the school grounds and keeping the pedestrian gate closed. Consequently, some girls were in danger last week when an intruder came onto the property through the gate and harassed some of our girls who were waiting for lifts. Fortunately, our girls did not come to any physical harm. A security guard has been employed to stand guard at the Conyngham Road gate pedestrian entrance each afternoon from 2 to 6pm.
Please do not try to gain access to the school through the Conyngham Road gate. This gate MUST be kept closed at all times and the Hostel Staff are not to be buzzed to open it. If you are bringing your daughter to waterpolo practice in the afternoon or evening, drop her in Kestell Street to enter through the opening in the fence. She can then walk to the waterpolo pool while you watch her. Thank you for your understanding. Together let us make Collegiate grounds safe for your daughter.

| TOASTMASTERS INTER-SCHOOLS SPEECH COMPETITION |
|
Two Grade 11 girls, Khanyisa Nogaya (D3) and Senthil Pillay (D5) (placed first and second in the Collegiate Youth Leadership Programme speech competition earlier this year), participated in the Inter-Schools’ Speech Competition on Monday night. Both spoke extremely competently, but Khanyisa, especially, is to be congratulated on being placed second amongst the Port Elizabeth High Schools. Whilst her prepared speech was of a high standard, it was her fantastic unprepared speech that secured her the position of runner-up.

Last week Wednesday the newly-appointed prefects, accompanied by Mrs Biggs, Mrs Abrey, Ms van Rooyen and Ms van der Westhuizen departed to Waterways for the Prefect Camp. The two days spent at camp were crammed with activities centering on leadership and developing a bond amongst the new prefects as they prepare for the year ahead as leaders of the school. A special thanks to the Management Team as well as the House Mothers who gave of their time to engage with the girls at camp. The year ahead is set to be filled with optimism and enthusiasm as the girls prepare to embark on their journey as the Prefects of 2011.

Congratulations to Rebecca Hartle (E4) who enjoyed success in the Arts and Culture Trust/DALRO scholarship competition. In July Rebecca took part in the Eastern Cape regional audition held in Grahamstown and was chosen to go forward to the final national round of auditions. During the September holiday she joined 5 other finalists in Johannesburg where they had to perform at the Globe Theatre in Gold Reef City. Each finalist had to perform a monologue, a contemporary dance routine, a vignette and a group musical theatre piece in front of a panel of judges comprising various theatre personalities, actors, agents and choreographers. Rebecca won a sum of money as well as a large book prize.

Dear Parents Speech Night, Prefects’ Induction Ceremony and Valedictory are all prestigious occasions and cause for celebration. At Speech Night we celebrate the academic, cultural and all round success of those who have excelled. At this stage I would like to apologise to the Grade 10 girls and their parents for having to exclude the non-award winners from Speech Night. Unfortunately, with the school having grown and with the increased numbers in Grade 10, 11 and 12, it was not possible to fit all three grades into the Hall. Inducting the 2010-2011 Prefects is further cause for celebration as we acknowledge the pupil leaders of the Collegiate family. At the Valedictory ceremony we take leave of our 2010 Grade 12 ladies and celebrate with their parents the drawing to a close of their school years as they step out into the adult world. We wish them and their parents much strength over the next weeks of study and examination writing and success at the end of it. Please take note that all pupils in Grades 8 to 11 have been issued with a copy of the final examination timetable. This is also available on the Collegiate website.
Mrs F. R. Biggs

| CRADOCK "TOP 10" ATHLETICS MEETING |
|
Eight of our school’s athletes headed for Cradock on Friday afternoon. We stayed in the Victoria Manor - a pure gem from yester year, where Collegiate Old Girls made us feel at home with their magnificent B&B facilities. The owner, Mrs Sandra Antrobus, will be returning to Collegiate next year to celebrate her 50th school reunion and we look forward to hosting her at Collegiate.
After a restful evening, our athletes were prepared for the stiff competition that lay ahead of them. Their results are as follows: U14: Lauren Church(A2) - gold in 100m, bronze in 200m; Olivia Briggs(A4) - 4th in 100m heat and 4th in the 200m heat; Anoraine Cowley(A1) - 3rd in her 400m heat. U15: Sinclair McConnell(B1) - silver in 100m, gold in 200m; Caitlin Shone(B5) - bronze in 400m, silver in 800m. U16: Alise Ferreira (C1) - 7th in long jump, 3rd in 400m heat; Helena Du Randt (C2) - 4th in the long jump final. U17: Aidan Battison (D1) - gold in Long Jump and Triple Jump.
Congratulations to the girls on achieving these fine results and thank you to the parents who came to Cradock to support their daughters.
It is with much sadness that we say farewell to Sinclair McConnell as she leaves South African to live in Australia. Sinclair has fast became one of Collegiate’s and the Eastern Cape’s most promising school girl athletes. We shall miss Sinclair, but we hope that she enjoys a long and successful involvement in Athletics "down under".

A familiar sight which we will miss: Sinclair McConnell sprinting for the finishing line

Those who attended Speech Night would have seen the stunning flower arrangements that adorned the stage. Special thanks to Mrs McConnell for these arrangements.
Thank you, too, to all the Matric mothers who are leaving us for all the flowers you have provided so generously over the years for the school.

Collegiate entered girls from its u14, u15, u16 and u19 teams to participate in the EP trials. Our girls, true to form, made our school proud. Miss Kerrigan sat on the stands waiting in anticipation to hear who had been selected for the EP team and she burst with pride when the teams were announced. It is pleasing to see the Collegiate standard of polo is of such a high calibre. WEDNESDAY NIGHT WATERPOLO LEAGUE
|
|
All parents are invited to attend our Wednesday evening league matches. Waterpolo is a growing sport and we need to encourage the girls and show them your support as parents. We have a tuckshop facility that sells delicious boerewors rolls to nibble on while watching matches or networking with parents from other schools. There are 28 teams playing matches every week from seven different schools. It starts at 17h15 and ends at 20h05. Bring the family and granny and gramps and let us support Collegiate Waterpolo.
A big thank you to Mr and Mrs de Marco and Mr and Mrs Goosen (Bianca and Charis’s parents) for their time and commitment to running the tuckshop. Any parents who would like to get involved must please contact Miss Kerrigan at the school.
