 INTER-HOUSE DEBATING

The annual Inter-House Debating competition was held over the past two weeks. In the first round, debating the legality of same-sex marriages, the Queen Alexandra team faced a superior Queen Mary team, while the Queen Victoria team were pipped at the post by Queen Elizabeth.

Last Thursday, the final saw the teams debating restrictions on the press. All the girls acquitted themselves well but it was the team of Queen Elizabeth (Michelle Zondagh, Jamie-Leigh Michau and Chantal Botha)who took the honours. The adjudicator, Mrs Woods of the PE-Uitenhage Debating league, commented in particular on the amusing moments in the debate and remarked that she was pleased none of the girls were running the country.

Thank you to all who supported their teams. Perhaps it was the great teacher-support from Queen Elizabeth House that spurred them on to glory.

WE ARE PROUD OF OUR SA SPORTSWOMEN!

Danielle Wilson (D1) left South Africa for Vancouver, Canada, earlier this week where she will train with the Canadian National Diving team before joining the SA Diving team in Arizona, USA, for the FINA World Junior Diving Championship in September. A few days later Keisha Arnolds (D1) departed for Singapore with the rest of the SA U17 Hockey team where she will play in the Junior Olympics. We wish them both well and hope that they return victorious and benefit greatly from the experience. The D1 class will certainly miss them over the next few weeks!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

The third term is well underway with all teachers working hard to cover a full academic programme.  We urge you to encourage your daughters to follow a disciplined homework/study session.  This is especially necessary for the Grade Twelves with their Trial Examinations looming ever closer.  Please could you refrain from making appointments (such as learner's licence test, driver's licence tests, doctor's appointments) for your daughter during school hours as any absence from the class is a loss of valuable academic tuition.

CHARITY BAZAAR UPDATE

In the last Chat we reported on the annual Charity Bazaar and the huge success that it was. We are now proud to report that an amount of R30 635.10 will be handed over to the Beggar-in-Chief of the Christmas Cheer fund. Welld done to all involved on raising such a magnificent amount for those less fortunate than ourselves.

GRADE NINE EMS PROJECT:
"One Hundred Rand in Ten Days"

EMS took on a new guise this year when it was time for the annual project. Each year the grade 9 learners have to draw up a business plan as part of their Economic and Management Science assessment criteria.  The girls usually do not really enjoy doing this project, so under the inspiration and guidance of Miss Kerrigan, the project was “tweaked” a little. In Miss Kerrigan's words:

The concept was simple.  We wanted the girls to have a hands-on understanding of how a business is run as well as the responsibility that goes along with running a successful business.

The girls were told to borrow R100 from their parents as the seed capital and start a business.  They had to sell products for 10 days,  during which time they had to provide the relevant paperwork concerned with purchasing and selling of items.  At the end of the 10 day period the girls had to repay the loan to their parents and calculate their profit.  They were allowed to keep the profit they had made for themselves once they had paid 10% in TAX to Miss  Kerrigan.

The idea of the Tax payment was to teach the girls about the value of money, introduce a sense of duty and educate them about being socially responsible citizens.

The Grade 9 learners dutifully paid their due and an amount of over R5 000.00 has been raised. I have decided to donate this money to the Cancer Association in memory of Kevin Kerrigan, my father who lost his battle to this sordid disease in 2007, and to the many families who have lost a loved one or who know of somebody battling this disease.

On Monday morning Mrs Joan Duarte of the Cancer Association was invited to assembly where a cheque for R5000 was handed over to her on behalf of the Grade 9 girls. The balance of the money raised was donated to the Elizabeth Donkin. Well done to all the girls and to Miss Kerrigan. This is yet another example of our "Caring Collegiate" ethos at work for the betterment of the community.

News just in is that the Business Women's Assocation, as well as Mr Edward Gutsche, have contacted Miss Kerrigan and offered to run a mentor programme for this project next year.
