COLLEGIATE WATER POLO U15 TOURNAMENT

The U15A water polo team travelled to East London to participate in the Stirling Girls’ U15 Water Polo Tournament.

The girls played really well considering they only started training a week before the tournament was scheduled, because of the cold water temperatures. The girls played against schools that have heated swimming pools and offer winter training.

Congratulations to Kate Mather our coach and the U15A team on being placed fourth overall in the tournament.

The results were as follows:

Collegiate vs Pearson won 9 - 3
Collegiate vs Cambridge won 11 - 1
Collegiate vs Kingsridge won 9 - 2
Collegiate vs Stirling lost 9 - 0
Collegiate vs Hudson Park lost 2 - 6
Collegiate vs Clarendon lost 4 - 7

A special "Thank You" to Mrs Anne De Marco who kindly assisted with transport and for being a super ‘tour mommy"

BUDDING ARCHITECTS

An architect’s "Budding Architects" competition arranged by the Eastern Cape Institute for Architects, was held early one morning during the trial examinations when four of our girls plunged into the unknown world of architecture. The task was to design and build a piece of furniture that could be donated to the Protea Children’s Home. The piece had to be both multifunctional and eye catching. All the tools of the trade were provided, including a pair of very handy architects and a jigsaw. With their assistance we were able to do most of the D.I.Y. work with the jig saw.

By the end of the morning we had created a beautiful lounger with extra space for storage. The day was exciting and we learnt a great deal about the world of architecture while working with the architects. The participants were Sixolile Selana (E2), Megan Francis (E5), Ashley Adami (E2) and Laura Smith (D1).

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Dear Parents
As you no doubt will have noticed the building of the new car park, security gate and fence are forging ahead. Please be patient during the building operations. The building site is off limits to everybody as the area is a construction site. Girls are to be dropped off and picked up either at Jenkins Way in Conyngham Road or at the front entrance of the School in Kestell Street. Those girls entering and exiting the School via Kestell Street are to use the patio entrance.
Please remember that we do not have a report meeting in the fourth term, but should you have any queries concerning your daughters’ progress, feel free to phone either me, the Grade Head or Subject Head to arrange a meeting.
The fourth term is always a very busy term so please note the important dates that are given in the Chat. We had planned to issue the November Examinations timetable with this Chat. However, the Education Department has notified us that the Grade 9 timetable issued by them is going to change. As soon as we have the information we will finalise our timetable and publish this on our website. We will notify you by sms when the timetable is on the website and will include a printed copy with the next Chat.

Mrs F.R. Biggs

PRESIDENTS AWARD

On Friday the 17 September, Collegiate hosted the Gold Award Ceremony for all the Eastern Cape recipients of the gold award. This program, to empower young people, was introduced by Nelson Mandela and the legacy lives on. Every student that enrolls in this award program must complete levels bronze, silver and gold in community service, sport, adventure and skill. It is a time consuming process to reach the top level with gold. Everyone was there, from a representative of the presidency, Minister Collins Gabane, to the CEO of the program, Mr Martin Scholts.

Our own Kirsten Malan (E1) received a gold award for completing her gold level in this program and was also asked by the office of the awards to give a speech on her community service. We congratulate Kirsten on this achievement.

ACCOUNTING OLYMPIAD

Of the seventeen Matric Accounting pupils who entered the SAIPA National Accounting Olympiad, nine achieved the 80% necessary to proceed to the second round. This was the highest number, together with Westville Boys’ High in Kwazulu Natal, to proceed through to the second round from an individual school. This was no mean feat taking into consideration that nationally there were 1211 entries from 209 schools (85 of them from 14 schools in the Eastern Cape).
The final results have been published on the SAIPA website and, although we have unfortunately not been told where the girls have been placed nationally (only the top three positions are given), we are proud to announce that the top three candidates in the Eastern Cape are all Collegiate girls, namely: Vela Njisane (1st); Alison Rijs (2nd) and Chiney Hobbs (3rd).

Well done to all of you!
