Grade 9 "In" Weekend

Hi parents

Just in case your daughters don’t communicate too well, I thought I’d keep you up to speed wrt the ‘in’ weekend help last weekend. I just wish we’d had a camera with us more often! After an outing, a movie and supper at Greenacres, they returned home quite happy, apart from Alicia, whose phone, sadly, had been stolen in a shop. It’s hard to be a teenager and have so many responsibilities! I had a little treasure hunt for them and it was good to see them tearing around the hostel, being competitive and noisy, doing what kids do actually love to do – play games. On Saturday morning, Mrs Theron and Mrs Waller and a busload headed off for Kragga Kamma Game Reserve for a short drive. They were impressed with Liz’s knowledge of the game and, later, Tana got up close and personal with monkeys who stole hot chips off her plate – that’s when one needed a camera!

In the afternoon, the girls went off to Leletu Baby Home and quite a few tears were shed there, as they heard some of the heartbreaking stories of abandoned babies. Happily, most get adopted or fostered fairly soon after arrival. The Home was delighted with all the baby contributions and all the linen that we were able to pass on. Thanks for all you handed on. The girls watched two dvds that night and slept in the TV room, so they were a very tousled bunch for breakfast the next morning. On Sunday afternoon they had a picnic down at the pool and when I went to check on them, some were in a cluster playing 30 Seconds, others seemed to be chilling and quite a few had headed off back to hostel to do some homework (that’s the part you parents want to hear!).

So, all in all, I think the ‘in’ weekend idea is a success. It’s always harder work for the matrons but they are very willing to give up their time when the girls are having fun and are appreciative. Thanks too to the Le Roux’s who supplied us with super strawberries. JJ Theron made cupcakes and decorated them using the said strawberries, but the bulk of the strawberries will be given as dessert today to the whole hostel. We always appreciate any contributions.

Your daughters continue to be a joy and delight – but you can have them back for the holidays!
