Internet Acceptable User Policy

1. PURPOSE

Access to the internet is provided for educational research and learning. The purpose of this policy is to provide rules for appropriate use of all types of Information Technology and the internet. Learners and parents are asked to read carefully through the following learner agreement.Use of these services is subject to the following conditions:

2.YOUR ACCOUNT

Internet access at Collegiate Girls’ High School is controlled through individual accounts and passwords. Each user of the Collegiate Girls’ High School system is required to read this Internet Policy and sign an Internet User Agreement prior to receiving an Internet access account and password.

3. APPROPRIATE USE

Access to the internet is provided for the purposes of educational research and learning, as well as class based activities and research.

4. INAPPROPRIATE USE

Individual Internet use may not interfere with others’ productive use of Internet resources. Users may not violate the network policies of any network accessed through their account. Inappropriate Internet use includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • The Internet may not be used for illegal or unlawful purposes, including, but not limited to: copyright infringement, obscenity, libel, slander, fraud, defamation, plagiarism, harassment, intimidation, forgery, impersonation, illegal gambling, soliciting for illegal pyramid schemes, and computer tampering (e.g. spreading computer viruses).
  • Individuals should limit their personal use of the Internet. Collegiate Girls’ High School allows limited personal use for independent learning, and public service. Learners may not establish school computers as participants in any peer-to-peer network, unless approved by the I.T. Network administrator. 
  • Individuals may not view, copy, alter, or destroy data, software, documentation, or data communications belonging to Collegiate Girls’ High School or another individual without authorized permission.
  • In the interest of maintaining network performance, students are not allowed to send large (over 3MB) electronic mail attachments or video files.

5. SECURITY

For security purposes, learners may not share account or password information with another person. Internet accounts are to be used only by the assigned user of the account for authorized purposes. Attempting to obtain another learner’s account password is strictly prohibited. A learner must contact the IT administrator to obtain a password reset if they have reason to believe that any unauthorized person has obtained their password. Learners must take all necessary precautions to prevent unauthorized access to Internet services and perrsonal data. 

6. FAILURE TO COMPLY

 Failure to comply with the rules and regulations as laid out in this document may result in the following:

  • Temporary or permanent revocation of access to some or all computing and networking  resources and facilities;
  • Disciplinary action;
  • Legal action.

7. MONITORING AND FILTERING

Collegiate Girls’ High School may monitor any Internet activity occurring on Collegiate Girls’ High School’s ground including the school’s desktops, laptops or any device that is connected to the school’s network.

8. BYOD

Learners are invited to bring electronic devices such as ipads, tablets, netbooks, laptops and e-readers with internet connectivity.

Each teacher will discuss the use of these devices with learners and outline their use in the classroom.

If a learner chooses to bring an electronic device to Collegiate, it remains the sole responsibility of the learner to look after her device. Collegiate Girls’ High school will not be held responsible for any loss, damage or theft of any personally owned device; and as such each learner understands that these devices are brought to school at their own risk.

Learners may use their electronic devices only if:

  • they are instructed to do so by their teacher and
  • it enhances their learning program.

If a learner’s electronic device interferes with their learning or the learning of others it will be considered a breach of discipline and the learner pupil will be dealt with accordingly.

The use of electronic devices is a privilege and not a right for learners.

It is each learner’s responsibility to make sure their device is charged before coming to school. No facilities will be provided to charge any devices on the school campus. Should the learner be unable to read a setwork book in an e-book format, for example, this will be treated in the same light as leaving her book at home and will result in punishment.

Learners are responsible for maintaining the hardware and software on their devices.

Learners using a windows-based device must ensure that they have a working anti-virus installed. Spot checks on devices will be performed from time to time.

9.DISCLAIMER

Collegiate Girls’ High School assumes no liability for any direct or indirect damages arising from the learner’s connection to the Internet. Collegiate Girls’ High School is not responsible for the accuracy of information found on the Internet and only facilitates the accessing and dissemination of information through its systems. Learners are solely responsible for any material that they access and disseminate through the Internet. We encourage everyone to use Internet access responsibly.

10. INTERNET ACCEPTABLE USER POLICY AGREEMENT

I hereby acknowledge that I have read and understood the Internet Acceptable Use Policy of Collegiate Girls’ High School. I agree to abide by these policies. I understand that if I violate such rules, I may face legal or disciplinary action according to applicable law or school policy.

I hereby agree to indemnify and hold Collegiate Girls’ High School, its employees, and the School Governing Body harmless for any loss, damage, expense or liability resulting from any claim, action or demand arising out of or related to the learner’s use of Collegiate Girls’ High School computer resources and the network, including reasonable attorney fees. Such claims shall include, without limitation, those based on trademark or service mark infringement, trade name infringement, copyright infringement, unfair competition, plagiarism, defamation, unlawful discrimination or harassment, and invasion of privacy.
