Athletics
Our athletes are treated professionally and follow training programmes specific to their various disciplines. The athletes are introduced to stretching, strengthening and conditioning exercises, and attend fitness, agility and specialisation sessions led by qualified coaches who have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in all areas of athletics. All our learners are given an opportunity to compete at the annual Inter-House Athletics Day – a highlight on the sporting calendar. Following our spirited Inter-House Athletics events, the standout athletes advance to the zonal meetings, where they begin an exciting journey of competitive progression. From there, they have the opportunity to qualify for the Metro, district, and Provincial Championships, with the most exceptional performers ultimately earning the prestigious honour of representing Collegiate at the National Championships.
Artistic Swimming
The artistic swimming programme at Collegiate has grown in recent years. The artistic swimming girls take immense pride in participating in the Eastern Cape Schools Synchro Challenge in Term One, which tests them on their various routines and figures. The Aquatics Day performance is also another annual highlight.
Cross-Country
The cross-country team competes in the local Nelson Mandela Bay league. Events are held in the winter season at various venues throughout the metro. The Cross-Country team also participates in the annual National All-Girls Festival, as well as various derby days. A highlight on the cross-country calendar is the annual Inter-House Cross-Country event that takes place on campus, with all our learners being encouraged to participate.
Chess
Chess is a sport that has grown vastly over the past few years and Collegiate is proud of its chess programme. As a school, we enter two sides into the local league, which is always competitive and takes place on Friday afternoons. The Chess team also participates in the annual National All-Girls Festival, as well as various derby days.
Cricket
Cricket at Collegiate has grown vastly over the years. We field two teams that participate in the local girls’ A league, with both teams playing matches once a week. We also have General Cricket for the social cricketers. The 1st team tour to Cape Town every February, which is always an exciting T20 Tournament for our girls. Collegiate hosts a T20 Tournament in September as part of the Spring Sports Festival and is currently the reigning champion.
E-sports
E-sports was introduced in 2024, as we celebrated our 150th year. We participating in gaming league fixtures, undertake strategy sessions, and connect on new developments in gaming, information technology and the Fourth Industrial Wave.
Hockey
Over the years, hockey has traditionally been one of the main sports codes at Collegiate. Since the completion of our astroturf in 2006, our hockey program has delivered several EP and South African representatives. In 2025, Collegiate was the top-ranked Eastern Cape School for our collective hockey program.
Close to 200 learners participate during the winter months in bi-weekly hockey training sessions with our enthusiastic coaching staff. Our teams play several fixtures against Eastern Cape-based schools, and also travel to various towns around South Africa for derbies and festivals, from under 14 level through to our flagship 1st team.
Hockey at Collegiate is a vibrant team sport enjoyed by many of the girls. Regardless of their playing proficiency, the camaraderie enjoyed on and off the astroturf is unparalleled.
Netball
Netball is one of our most cherished winter sporting codes, with age groups ranging from U14 to U19. Our teams compete in a full programme of fixtures, including winter sport derbies on weekends and competitive midweek leagues. These opportunities ensure that every player enjoys a vibrant, challenging and rewarding season. Throughout the season, our netball teams participate in a range of prestigious festivals, both locally and across the country. These opportunities provide invaluable exposure to diverse playing styles and elevated levels of competition, continually raising the standard of our game. Collegiate further distinguishes itself by hosting its own prestigious first team festival every July, as well as an exciting Fast Five Tournament during our annual Spring Sports Festival – events that celebrate excellence, growth, and the spirit of the sport. These festivals attract teams from across provincial borders, further enriching the level of competition and the overall experience of our players.
Squash
Squash continues to be a well-supported sport at Collegiate, as seen by the vast number of girls who participate in social squash. Traditionally, the school enters two teams in the local Friday leagues.
The Squash team participates in the annual National All Girls Festival, as well as various derby days, as well as the Eastern Province ladies’ league.
Swimming
Swimming is most definitely a life skill and an important one to Collegiate. We offer a Learn to Swim programme that is operated by a qualified instructor. Collegiate offers swimming for non-club swimmers called General Swimming. Competitive club swimmers train with their respective club and then represent the school at various school galas. The Inter-House Gala continues to be the highlight on the school calendar for Term 1.
Tennis
Tennis is a popular sport played throughout the year at Collegiate. The calendar is a busy one, from league tennis in Term 1 to the Spring Festival in Term 3, our tennis players certainly enjoy a vibrant and busy schedule. Our 1st tennis team participate in regional tournaments together with our brother school, Grey High and regularly travel to East London, Grahamstown and Cradock. The Wilson Shield hosted at Sun City is an opportunity for our players to match up against players from all over South Africa.
The mid-year Inter-house tennis is hugely entertaining and competitive, as are all the Derby Days played against various schools. The All Girls Festival each year is arguably the most enjoyable tour for the girls, as a multitude of our sports teams travel across the country together to collectively represent Collegiate. Our energetic coaches are ever encouraging of the girls, ensuring that all 7 of our courts are occupied with enthusiastic team and social players year-round.
Water Polo
Water Polo at Collegiate continues to be an exciting sporting choice during the summer season. We are also extremely proud of the many Old Collegians who have represented South Africa at various age-group levels.
We have teams participating in the Collegiate local league as well as at various tournaments throughout the country, including St Stithians, Rodean, Shaun Fuchs, Reddam Mackenzie Cup, to name a few.
The Collegiate U15 tournament is the flagship event of the annual Spring Sports Festival. This prestigious tournament takes place during September and hosts 18 of the top U15 teams from across Africa. The heated pool gives the Water Polo players an opportunity to continue with high-performance training during the winter months.
